Shark attack closes South Maui beach; female bitten in 'upper torso'

Maui County officials have reopened Ulua Beach where a female was bitten by a shark on Wednesday.

The South Maui beach was reopened at noon Thursday.

Ocean Safety officials report the bite happened in 10 feet of water about 30 feet offshore.

County officials say she was bitten in the upper torso.

The shoreline from Polo Beach Park to the Mana Kai Maui Resort in the Kihei-Wailea area was closed off until officials could determine it was safe to reopen.

Shark Facts

Tiger sharks, great white sharks and bull sharks are behind most shark attacks on humans. These species live almost everywhere, are large enough that their prey is human size, are powerful enough to inflict a fatal bite and are at the top of the food chain, so they aren't afraid to attack.
